Atletico Madrid have emerged as a potential destination for Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, according to AS.
In Aston Villa’s final home match of the season, Martinez was emotional and waved goodbye to the fans which sparked rumours of a move away from the club this summer.
The World Cup winning goalkeeper has been one of Aston Villa’s best players in recent seasons.
His consistently impressive performances helped Villa qualify for the Champions League.
Emi Martinez to Atletico Madrid?
While Atletico already have a world class goalkeeper at the club in Jan Oblak, the report states that if he decides to leave the club this summer, Atletico would consider replacing him with Martinez.
Simeone sees Martinez as a suitable replacement, given his experience and leadership qualities.
Along with Atletico, Manchester United have also emerged as one of the candidates to sign Martinez this summer.
Ruben Amorim may step into the market to replace the struggling Andre Onana this summer and Martinez, who is going to be available for a move, is going to be the Portuguese manager’s target.
The competition between the two European giants could be intense to sign Martinez this summer.
Atletico Madrid have long term interest in the goalkeeper with Simeone reportedly contacting the goalkeeper after the 2022 World Cup but a bid was never made for the Argentinian goalkeeper.
He is back in the picture again this summer but it all depends on the future of Oblak.
