Leverkusen keen to sell Victor Boniface to Newcastle

Bayer Leverkusen are reportedly eager to offload Nigerian striker Victor Boniface this summer amid interest from Newcastle United.

The Magpies could perhaps do with adding more depth up front for next season, and Boniface could be a tempting option to consider if he really is available on the market.

The 24-year-old was a key player for Leverkusen last season when they won the Bundesliga title unbeaten, but his form has dipped slightly this term.

According to Soccernet.ng, there is now a desire from Leverkusen to cash in on Boniface, despite him still boasting a decent record of 17 goals and 11 assists in 51 appearances.

Boniface might not quite be good enough for Leverkusen at the moment, but he looks like someone who could make an impact at a club like Newcastle, even if only as a squad player.

The Nigeria international is unlikely to replace Alexander Isak as the main man up front in Eddie Howe’s side, but there could still be a role for him at St James’ Park.

For one thing, Isak has been a little injury prone at times, so Newcastle would do well to bring in cover for him.

Boniface could excel in that kind of role, and it will be interesting to see if this story develops in the weeks and months ahead.

Challenging summer ahead for Bayer Leverkusen

Other big names are also leaving Leverkusen this summer in what could prove a very challenging window for the club.

Jeremie Frimpong is close to joining Liverpool, Florian Wirtz is attracting interest from Bayern Munich and others, Jonathan Tah is out of contract, and manager Xabi Alonso has also announced he’s leaving as he prepares to take the Real Madrid job.

Boniface’s departure on top of that doesn’t seem ideal, but it seems the club are prepared to let him go and make big changes to their squad this summer.
