Chelsea have stepped up their pursuit of AC Milan’s Mike Maignan, as the Blues look to reinforce their goalkeeping department ahead of the new season, according to Fabrizio Romano.
The club have initiated contact with the Italian side, and head coach Enzo Maresca is fully behind the move, viewing the French international as a perfect fit for his tactical philosophy.
Maignan has now emerged as a top priority for Chelsea, who are keen to find a long-term solution between the sticks.
Mike Maignan has impressed some of the top clubs
The 29-year-old has been a consistent performer for both club and country, gaining a reputation as one of the finest goalkeepers in Europe.
His ability to command his area and distribute the ball with precision has caught the attention of some of the biggest clubs in the world with Chelsea leading the race to sign him this summer.
Maresca is said to be a major driving force behind the move. The Blues boss firm believer in building from the back, and Maignan’s composure with the ball at his feet makes him an ideal fit for a possession-based system.
Romano provided the update on his X account:
“Understand contacts have started also with Enzo Maresca appreciating the French goalkeeper as ideal option for his tactical approach.
“Chelsea are on it, and the manager has approved Maignan as a key target.”
While Chelsea already have Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen on their books, neither goalkeeper has fully cemented the No. 1 role.
The arrival of a high-calibre shot-stopper like Maignan would bring experience, quality, and leadership to the backline.
