Fabrizio Romano has explained why Newcastle United have a problem in this summer’s transfer window despite their strong performances in recent years.
Eddie Howe is widely seen as having done a superb job at St James’ Park, bringing in some top players and making the club a lot more competitive.
Newcastle are back in the Champions League next season, making that two times they’ve qualified in the last three seasons, while they also won the Carabao Cup final last season, ending a decades-long trophy drought.
Still, Romano feels they have a problem at this stage in their development, as they’re still seen by many as something of a ‘stepping stone’ club.
However, they haven’t actually made that many major sales so far, meaning players might be put off finding themselves in a situation like that of Alexander Isak.

Fabrizio Romano on Newcastle United’s transfer issue
“I think there is a crucial point here. We always see Newcastle signing many players, bringing top players to the club, but it’s difficult to see Newcastle selling players,” Romano told Men In Blazers.
“And sometimes some players who are younger and maybe want to develop in a different way, maybe they are scared to go to Newcastle and not having the opportunity to leave the club in maybe two or three years.
“So I think Alexander Isak can be also the opportunity for Newcastle to show that, yes, sometimes you also have to sell your players. You can’t always to keep all of them.
“So I think this is one of the points. Sometimes players are scared to go there because maybe they have to stay there for five years. And some of them in modern football want to leave after two or three years is part of the game.”
Could Newcastle benefit from selling Alexander Isak?
Romano mentions Isak, who is keen to join Liverpool, as per his post on X below…
?? Alexander Isak keeps waiting for Liverpool, his only clear choice despite reports on Al Hilal and more clubs.
Personal terms never gonna be an issue, as choice has been made weeks ago.
