Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has dropped a pretty clear hint that he wants another central defender this summer after the injury to Levi Colwill.

Colwill is expected to be out for much of the season ahead, and this has led to the Blues being linked with a surprise move to sign Liverpool centre-back Ibrahima Konate.

Chelsea News claim that Chelsea are looking at Konate as a serious option, with the France international in the final year of his Liverpool contract.

That could perhaps put pressure on the Reds to cash in on him now, though one imagines they’ll be desperate to avoid selling such an important player to a rival.

Enzo Maresca on Chelsea’s need for defenders

As quoted by Fabrizio Romano, it seems Maresca has made it clear he’d like another option in central defence, though of course he did not name Konate or any other specific targets…

“The club knows what I think, we need a central defender in my view after Colwill’s injury… but we are looking internally for a defender,” the Italian tactician said.

Konate might not be the most realistic option for Chelsea, but he’s certainly a tempting opportunity on the market due to his contract situation.

We have also seen these two clubs doing business before, with Chelsea notably signing Fernando Torres in a famous big-money move back in 2011.

Others to play for both clubs include Mohamed Salah, Daniel Sturridge, Yossi Benayoun and Raul Meireles.
